Buying a New Home Vs Pre-Owned Home

Living in a lovely, older home can be a rewarding experience. In fact, 4 out of 5 buyers purchase a previously owned home. Older homes often have “character” defined by seasoned architecture and mature landscaping. They typically have draperies and blinds already installed. In addition, a home built some years ago may have been built with unique craftsmanship and detail. The foundation and drainage system of an older home has often stood the test of time.

On the other hand, an older home may require a new plumbing or heating system, and may be less energy efficient. It may require a new roof or new windows, and the carpet may need to be replaced. The appliances may be as old as the home, and very expensive to operate, thus requiring the purchase of new, more energy-efficient models. The older home will typically require more of your time and energy to keep it properly maintained.

Older homes are usually found in well-established neighborhoods, with plenty of mature trees, and perhaps a park or two nearby. They are often close to schools and shopping, and often not far from the center of town. This can be a huge bonus if commuting time is a factor.
